Welcome to “The Biologist Brewer”!
This blog represents many firsts for me so I’ll ask for your patience as I begin. This is my first blog and will keep a journal of my activities as I begin the process of becoming a home brewer. It will also be a space where I can share my thoughts on all things beer and the biology of beer.
Before going any further, let me introduce myself. My name is Clint Springer. I am a faculty member in the Department of Biology at Saint Joseph University located in the beer loving city of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. My area of expertise is known as plant physiological ecology, which means that I study how plants respond to their environment. For those of you interested, my Google Scholar profile can be found here. I am especially interested in the effects of human induced climate change and its impacts on plants. As for the “brewer” side of this blog’s title, a brewer I am not. However, recently my personal interests have been focused on the amazing craft beer scene that has erupted in the area surrounding Philadelphia, PA and the United States. I hope in the coming months that I will become a successful home brewer and that others can benefit from my adventure. It is also my hope to highlight the amazing work of other home and professional brewers producing amazing products in the Philadelphia region. Occasionally, as I explore the biology of brewing, some of my posts will discuss the biology of brewing. The ultimate marriage of two things I enjoy!
I am looking forward to exploring these two fascinating worlds with you. If you’d like you can follow me on social media where I can be found on Twitter and Facebook as well.
Prost!
